Welcome to My Sea Kayaking Website

I have created it as a way to share my passion for sea kayaking and wilderness, and to tell you about some of the places I have visited.  I came to kayaking late in my life, after early years as a power boater and many years as a great lakes sailor.  My wife, Lisa and I were looking for a different kind of vacation in 1994, when I stumbled on an advertisement for a three day, wilderness kayaking trip off the coast of Maine.  Neither one of us had been in a kayak before, but we gave it a try and loved it.  The rest, as they say, is history.

We have owned our own boats since 1998, starting with a large open double kayak.  Currently we each paddle Impex composite boats (Welcome to Impex Kayaks!).  When not paddling with Lisa, I travel with the Adirondack Mountain Club (Albany Chapter ADK) and my buddies Bruce and John.  My current interests include further developing my own paddling skills and extended expedition style wilderness kayak trips.  I hope you find this site entertaining and useful.

Why YackMan?

Where did this name (YackMan) come from?  It’s not hard to figure out.
My last name (Yackel, with a long “a” sound “Yake-l) is often mispronounced with a short “a” sound (Yack-l).  That, combined with my love of kayaking (ka-YAK-ing) gives me the nickname YackMan.

About my Photos and Videos:

  1. 1.Photos: If I’m in them, someone else took them and sent them to me. All photos are digital, taken with a Pentax Optio waterproof camera (www.pentaximaging.com), a Sanyo Xacti waterproof camera (livepage.apple.com) or a Nikon D50 (the D50 has been replaced by the D40 www.nikonusa.com/).

  2. 2.Videos: All videos on this site were compressed for web use using Quicktime.  Quicktime for the Mac or PC can be downloaded at no cost by following this link - Quicktime PlayerVideos were shot using a Pentax Optio, Sanyo Xacti or Oregon Scientific helmet cam (www2.oregonscientific.com).  These cameras are waterproof.  The Xacti and Oregon Scientific can take videos underwater.

Problems?

Some folks have reported problems accessing some of my web pages.  Others have reported that pictures are off center.  Some have been unable to play my videos.  Having looked into these problems, I have the following suggestions to make things work.

1.Update Your Browser: If you are using a browser that is more than two years old you need to update it.  This is true without regard to the platform (PC or Mac) you are using.  My website uses the very latest developments in web design technology.  It will not work well with older browsers.  Microsoft Explorer is particularly bad for accessing this site, as it has not been updated in some time.

2.Use Firefox: I recommend that you download the latest version of Firefox at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ .  This is a free download.  Firefox is quickly becoming the industry standard (even the Apple people recommended it to me over Safari).

3.Get Quicktime Player: All of my videos use the Quicktime format.  You will need Quicktime Player to see my videos.  A free download of the newest version of Quicktime Player is available at http://current-versions.com/quicktime

4.Update your OS: If your operating system has not been updated in a few years, you probably will have trouble accessing this site, along with many others on the internet.  Older operating systems will not have the proper instruction sets to accept the commands given by my site’s software.  I have a one year old Mac and a seven year old Mac.  My site runs on both of them, but I have updated the older Mac’s OS at least three times.

If you are having trouble, try the things listed above.  If your computer is too old to be properly updated, buy a new one (http://www.apple.com/ - my pitch for Apple).  My site is worth it :)
